The U.N. warns that in the next four months 750,000 Somalians are at risk of death if necessary measures are not taken against the drought and subsequent famine. The area known as Bay was declared the nation’s sixth famine zone, as East Africa’s worst drought in 60 years worsens. These areas are primarily located in the southern part of the country, controlled by the Islamist group Al-Shabab. The head of Médecins Sans Frontières told the BBC that Al-Shabab sets restrictions on aid workers, preventing many from getting help. Al-Shabab, which reportedly has ties to al Qaeda, says Western groups are exaggerating the crisis.
