Despite nearly universal rave reviews, there was one aspect of The Social Network that riled some critics: its woman problem. As The Daily Beast’s Rebecca Davis O’Brien noted—and many seconded—the film’s female characters are mostly “vengeful sluts or dumpy, feminist killjoys.” In a comment left on a comedy blog over the weekend that’s been circulating in the days since, screenwriter Aaron Sorkin mounted a defense of these critiques, writing that he was describing “a very angry and deeply misogynistic group of people”—Facebook’s founders—and that the online service was actually “born during a night of incredibly [sic] misogyny.”
