Trey Parker and Matt Stone, creators of the infamous and popular animated series South Park, have set their sights on Broadway. The Emmy-winning duo is set to write and direct a Mormon-themed musical to debut in March 2011. The plot will focus on a pair of Mormon missionaries dispatched to Africa, and a subplot involves Joseph Smith, Jr., the founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. In a joint statement, Parker and Stone said, "Growing up in Colorado, a lot of our friends were Mormons and we always thought their book would make a great musical." The two will work with Robert Lopez, creator and composer of hit musical Avenue Q, a show known for its outrageous humor. According to Lopez, the new show will be "a big traditional musical comedy, with, as you might expect, untraditional subject matter." No South Park characters will make the leap from television to stage though.
