South Sudanese soldiers allegedly raped scores of foreigners and others as tensions in the divided country hurt by years of civil war flared in July, according to a report. Last month, troops reportedly went on a four-hour rampage, targeting journalists and aid workers, male and female, for rape and death. “They shot dead a local journalist while focing the foreigners to watch, raped several foreign women, singled out Americans, beat and robbed people and carried out mock executions,” according to witnesses who spoke with the Associated Press, which also reported that nearby United Nations peacekeepers as well as the U.S. embassy there refused to help. One female aid worker said she was threatened and eventually raped by 15 South Sudanese soldiers after one held her at gunpoint with an AK-47 and said, “Either you have sex with me, or we make every man here rape you and then we shoot you in the head.”
