Welcome to the club: South Sudan has officially become an independent nation, an event made possible after the 2005 peace deal that ended the decades-long civil war with the north that killed 1.5 million people. U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon flew to the new capital, Juba, for the celebrations. Unfortunately, the world’s newest country is also one of its least developed: One in seven children dies before the age of 5. Additionally, there are continued fears of new conflict with the north, as the country’s northern border is still disputed.
