Spanish Cops Fatally Shoot Five Suspects, Foil Second Terror Attack

In the aftermath of a terror attack in Barcelona on Thursday.

Authorities in Spain say five suspects in a thwarted attack in the resort town of Cambrils were holding bomb belts when police fatally shot them late Thursday. The attack, which came just hours after 13 people were killed and more than 100 injured when a van drove into pedestrians in Barcelona, left five civilians and one police officer injured, authorities said. No further details were given on how they were injured, but local media said a vehicle had driven into a police car and nearby civilians before officers shot the suspects dead. One of the suspects had reportedly been brandishing a knife. Police say they believe the incident in Cambrils is connected to the Barcelona attack, though no further details were given. Investigators also suspect a home explosion in Alcanar may be linked to the separate attacks.
