James Clapper, the chief spy for the United States, issued a statement Friday explaining the recent change in opinion that the Libya attack was an act of terrorism linked to al Qaeda, rather than a spontaneous occurrence. The statement claims it only became clear afterwards that the strike was “a deliberate and organized terrorist attack.” A spokesman for Clapper clarified: “In the immediate aftermath, there was information that led us to assess that the attack began spontaneously following protests earlier that day at our embassy in Cairo.” Despite recent concerns, Clapper says the “intelligence community continues to work around the clock to gather details and understand exactly what happened in Benghazi.”
