The Pittsburgh Steelers' Troy Polamalu announced his plans Thursday to retire from football after 12 years in the NFL. The eight-time Pro Bowler and four-time first-team All-Pro safety called the team's owner Dan Rooney Wednesday to inform him of his decision, according to the Herald-Standard. Polamalu, 33, is considered one of the greatest safeties of all time and was the defensive player of the year in 2010. Polamalu said he had the realization to retire in church and didn't consider playing elsewhere. Last season he was limited to 12 games and 61 tackles due to injury.
