T Magazine’s Stefano Tonchi has been tapped as the editor-in-chief of W Magazine, Condé Nast announced Tuesday. Tonchi will replace Patrick McCarthy as the magazine’s editor. The announcement was made to T staff in a meeting this morning, and was followed by a press release circulated at Condé Nast. His replacement at T has not yet been named, and Tonchi said he was not yet sure if he would take other T editors with him to Condé Nast. “I had a really wonderful six years at the Times,” Tonchi told Media Decoder. He explained that the new job meant “taking a new challenge and going to a company whose priority is publishing magazines, versus, you know, a company whose priority is publishing a newspaper.”
