If you’re tired of paradise-paving parking lots sprouting up in your hometown, Reuters’s Felix Salmon has some charts and data to back you up. Cities that dramatically increase the number of parking spots available—like Hartford and New Haven, Conn.—have actually seen long-term decreases in population, while cities like Cambridge, Mass., that refuse to expand parking options are seeing growth. Salmon, who argues local governments should fight new parking development, sums up: “Parking lots are ... the best possible way of destroying a city’s soul.”
