A suicide bomber attacked a crowd of Shiite pilgrims outside mosque in the Iraqi city of Samarra on Saturday, killing 24 and wounding 28. The bomber detonated himself in the middle of a group of about 200 people, many of whom were Shiite pilgrims who had come to mark the death of one of their 12 revered imams in 874. A similar bombing in 2006 destroyed the gold dome of the mosque and set off years of retaliatory violence between Sunnis and Shiites. Samarra is about 62 miles north of Baghdad.
