Supreme Court Issues Temporary Stay on Refugees in Travel Ban Case

The court did not lift a lower-court ruling exempting close relatives of American citizens from the ban.

The Supreme Court on Monday issued a temporary stay on President Trump's travel ban with regards to the entrance of refugees, squashing the opportunity for about 24,000 refugees to come to the United States. Central parts of the ban have been blocked by two appeals courts since it was first issued in January: one court said the executive order unconstitutionally discriminated based on religion; and the other said Trump exceeded his statutory authority to control immigration. The Trump administration is now challenging these lower-court rulings in the Supreme Court. The court did not lift an appeals court ruling exempting grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins of American citizens from the travel ban that targets six Muslim-majority countries.
