Supreme Court Limits EPA’s Authority

But won’t affect broader policies.

The Supreme Court offered a dense and nuanced response to a case challenging the Environmental Protection Agency’s authority to regulate greenhouse-gas emissions from power plants. In a split decision, the Supreme Court ruled that the EPA overstepped its authority under the Clean Air Act when it came to regulating carbon emissions from new or modified plants. However, the ruling only applied to one provision and won’t likely affect President Obama’s broader climate-change policies.
