The president of the South American nation of Suriname was convicted of murder and sentenced to 20 years in prison on Friday for having political opponents executed in 1982. President Desi Bouterse was on a visit to China when the military court delivered the verdict, Reuters reported. He has made no comment and could appeal. The court found that he orchestrated the abduction and murder of 15 government critics after he took power in a coup.
