EQUAL RIGHTS

Surrogate Families Recognized in France

While surrogacy will continue to be outlawed in France, the country’s highest court will acknowledge the legal rights of families with children born of the practice in other countries. Before the ruling children were not granted any legal connection to their parents or civilian status in France. They could not obtain IDs, passports or state health care. The practice is most commonly used by heterosexual couples that cannot conceive, gay couples and single parents.
