An Army officer believed to have killed four people Saturday before leading police on a chase through Hurricane Irene was found dead Sunday of a gunshot wound in Pennsylvania. Leonard John Egland was suspected of killing his former mother-in-law, ex-wife, his ex-wife’s boyfriend, and the boyfriend’s young son in Virginia and Pennsylvania. He then kidnapped his own daughter and drove through Irene’s winds before eventually abandoning the girl unharmed at a hospital in Quakertown, Pa. Shortly before midnight Saturday, he then shot a police officer in the arm and injured another when he shot out the windshield to a car. Egland made his way to the Philadelphia suburb of Jamison—which was kept on lockdown during and after the storm, preventing many people from checking the damage to their homes. His body was found behind a gas station.
