A Florida man will be charged Monday for his role in the deaths of nine people who were found in an overheated tractor trailer at a Walmart parking lot in San Antonio, the Associated Press reported. The man, identified as 60-year-old James Mathew Bradley Jr. of Clearwater, will appear in federal court, but police would not say if he was the driver of the vehicle. “We’re looking at a human-trafficking crime,” San Antonio Police Chief William McManus told reporters, calling it “a horrific tragedy.” U.S. Attorney Richard Durbin called the case “an alien-smuggling venture gone horribly wrong.” Nearly 20 other people remain in critical condition in local hospitals, and authorities have expressed concern that the death toll may continue to rise.
