Aung San Suu Kyi told hundreds of immigrants who have fled Burma for Thailand that she “can give you one promise—I will try my best for you” at a speech in Bangkok on Wednesday. Suu Kyi, who had been under house arrest for years until recently being elected to Parliament, traveled to Thailand over the weekend, her first trip outside of her country since 1988. Hundreds of Burmese migrants packed into a narrow street in the Samut Sakhon province, and cheered and held banners as Suu Kyi spoke. “I am very happy and I want to cry,” said one witness, Phyu, who has been in Thailand for six years. “I feel that we will get democracy in Burma.”
