Syria Bombards Northern Town

With a brutal military crackdown, Syria’s government has regained control of Jisr al-Shughour, the restive border town that has been an epicenter of anti-regime protests. Fearing the violence, thousands of Syrians have flooded into nearby Turkey, setting up tent cities near the border and worsening a refugee crisis; Turkey has accepted 6,000 Syrians, most of them over the past few days. Arab governments are said to be reluctant to intervene in Syria because of its outsized influence on neighbors such as Israel and Lebanon and the chaos that may ensue if President Bashar al-Assad is ousted.
