Condemnation from fellow Arab nations seems to have had little effect on President Bashar al-Assad, who sent tanks into several towns on the border with Turkey. Activists say the tanks entered Taftanaz, Sermin, and Binnish today, killing several people. More than 1,700 people are reported to have been killed since March, and tens of thousands have been arrested. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for Assad to stop attacking civilians, and yesterday Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain withdrew their ambassadors.
