Just one day after the Syrian government promised to end its crackdown, at least 20 civilians were killed by troops. An attack on anti-government protesters Thursday resulted in several arrests of opposition supporters—many of them students—in addition to the deaths. The country’s official news agency, however, reported the story a little differently, claiming that soldiers and police were fighting “armed terrorist groups.”
