Syria’s Assad Reportedly Plans to Visit Kim Jong Un

Syria’s President Bashar Assad is reportedly planning to visit North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in what would be the first meeting between Kim and another head of state in Pyongyang. North Korean state media on Sunday said Assad announced the plans while receiving credentials for the North Korean ambassador on May 30. “I am going to visit the DPRK and meet HE Kim Jong Un,” Assad reportedly said. He was also cited expressing confidence that Kim would “achieve the final victory and realize the reunification of Korea without fail.” The trip has yet to be confirmed by the Syrian government, and no further details were available on when it might take place. The news comes as all eyes are on North Korea ahead of Kim’s June 12 summit with President Trump in Singapore. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also paid a visit to Pyongyang recently to discuss denuclearization and sanctions.
