Investigators said Friday that both engines of the TransAsia Airways plane that crashed into a bridge and then a river had failed. One engine went idle 37 seconds after takeoff; investigators think the pilot may have shut the other off in an attempt to restart them both together, but the flight crashed before that could happen. Taiwan’s vice president, Wu Den-yih, said the flight crew might have deliberately steered the plane away from buildings to prevent further deaths. “In his final moments, [the pilot] still wanted to control the plane to avoid harming residents in the housing communities,” he said. Thirty five people were killed in the crash.
