Democrats thought they had a winning issue for the midterm elections: tax-cuts for the middle class, but it turns out Congress can't cut a deal by Nov. 2., potentially further harming the party's chances at the polls. On Wednesday, the House and Senate adjourned leaving the tax cuts, among other central pocketbook issues, unresolved. Democrats had hoped that they could bring a delivered deal onto the stump. "It is both a political and government mistake," one representative said. Karl Rove crowed, “The failure to have a vote on the expiration of the tax cuts, knowing that they were coming, with a majority in the House and Senate, makes the president and the Democratic leadership of Congress look even more incompetent." It's not clear whether removing the obstacle of the election will make the new legislation any more achievable.
