A third-grade teacher in North Carolina has resigned after parents became “outraged” when their children were read a book about a gay couple during class time. Omar Currie chose to read King & King—a fable about a prince who meets a prince and falls in love—to his class after one of the students was bullied in gym class and called “gay.” “When I read the story, the reaction of parents didn’t come into my mind,” Currie, 25, said Tuesday. “In that moment, it just seemed natural to me to read the book and have a conversation about treating people with respect. My focus then was on the child, and helping the child.” An assistant principal who gave the book to Currie has also resigned while parents seek to have the book banned.
