Texas Tech University officials say a 19-year-old student fatally shot a campus police officer late Monday after authorities discovered drug paraphernalia in his dorm room. The incident prompted a lockdown on campus as authorities hunted for the freshman suspect, who allegedly pulled out a gun and shot an officer in the head at campus police headquarters before fleeing on foot. Campus police had reportedly visited his room for a welfare check when they discovered evidence of drugs and subsequently brought him to headquarters for debriefing. A statement from the university identified the suspect as Hollis Daniels. He was apprehended at around 9:30 p.m. local time and the lockdown was lifted, the university said.
