Thai Democrats Boycott Elections

Thailand’s main opposition Democrat Party will boycott the elections to be held on February 2, the group announced. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra called for the elections in order to end weeks of mass protests, but Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said during a news conference that it would not be fielding candidates because “Thai politics is at a failed stage.” Meanwhile, the head of the Thai army warns that such political divisions could trigger a “civil war.”
