The History of Lil B’s ‘BasedGod Curse’ on Kevin Durant (and Russell Westbrook)

      RESPECT

The Warriors pulled out a dramatic comeback down 3-1 in the Western Conference Finals to beat Durant’s Oklahoma City Thunder, and rapper Lil B is taking the credit.

There are three certainties in life: death, taxes, and that the BasedGod does not lie. Yes, it’s one of the oldest—and richest—social media feuds out there, and a curse pitched somewhere between Mercutio and that vengeful gypsy in Thinner. Back in 2011, NBA star Kevin Durant, he of the Oklahoma City Thunder, took to Twitter to call rapper Lil B “wack.”

      Then this happened:

Lil B, aka Brandon McCartney, is a 26-year-old Bay Area rapper and, as of May 26, 2011, the world’s preeminent Kevin Durant hater. So, when Durant’s Thunder—despite sporting a 3-1 series lead—lost Game 7 of this year’s Western Conference Finals to the Golden State Warriors, nobody was happier than The BasedGod:

Lil B and Durant’s five-year feud kept simmering ever since that day in 2011, when the rapper turned motivational speaker summoned his Twitter fingers. Now, the “BasedGod Curse” isn’t like other curses. If you either disrespect The BasedGod or attempt to take credit for something that he thinks he originated, well, vamoose sonofabitch.

“I mind my business and keep it real,” Lil B told The Daily Beast. “I don’t like to talk about people… unless they cross me or steal something when we know where it originated from.”

While Lil B has put curses on James Harden and most of the Cleveland Cavaliers for jacking his “cooking dance” celebration, his biggest beef has been with Durant, the originator of the BasedGod Curse. After the initial curse was bestowed, the two began yapping back and forth about settling it all on the court in a game of 1-1 (Lil B tried out for the D-League at one point).

The game never happened, and things remained quiet between the two when a cease-fire was somehow reached:

That came to an abrupt end in February 2014, when something awoke in Lil B and he started back in on Durant:

If the curse and the Twitter hatin’ weren’t enough, Lil B even dropped a music video for a song called “F*ck KD,” with a hook that repeats the line “Fuck Kevin Durant” 4x:

To make matters worse, in an interview with Complex, Thunder guard Russell Westbrook claimed that he’d never heard of The BasedGod, which led Lil B to retaliate by saying that Westbrook looked like a sandwich, and that he was also cursed:

Well, when the Warriors began their series against the Thunder, Lil B summoned “The BasedGod” and sent blessings to his hometown squad, while further reiterating that they’d win because Durant was still cursed:

After the Thunder took a 2-1 series lead against the Warriors, Lil B gave Durant props for “fighting through the curse”:

But now, it appears that KD, like so many others, has succumbed to the BasedGod Curse.

What a time to be alive.
