“I’m at my wit’s end. I’ve had enough. I’ve had enough of the ongoing slaughter of innocents, and I’ve had enough of inaction in this body.”
On Thursday, C-SPAN posted a video to YouTube compiling clips of some key moments from the filibuster.
Murphy began his remarks around 11:21 a.m. ET and didn’t yield the floor until nearly 15 hours later. Though he was relieved from speaking frequently via “questions” from some 40 other Senators, including a few Republicans, to hold the floor Murphy still had to remain standing without falling asleep or leaving the room to use the bathroom.
The video includes several statements from Murphy, as well clips of Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ), Bill Nelson (D-FL), Joe Manchin (D-WV), and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) speaking during the filibuster.
“We need to work with people in our local communities, not isolate or demonize them, to stop radicalization before it starts, and to prevent tragedies before they occur,” Warren said during the filibuster.
“We can ban Rambo-style assault weapons. We can take these weapons of war off our streets.”
C-SPAN also posted a separate clip of Murphy speaking to his son, who to his surprise arrived to watch his father in the gallery.
After a deal was reached that would bring a vote on expanding gun control legislation, Murphy finally yielded the floor at 2:11 a.m. The filibuster is eighth longest in the Senate.
