Thousands of protesters turned out in Tehran on Monday, inspired by the uprisings in Tunisia and Egypt. A witness tells Reuters that police broke up the protests by firing tear gas at the demonstrators. Iran’s opposition has not taken to the streets since December 2009. The Iranian government has stationed police in riot gear throughout Tehran. Secretary of Secretary Clinton gave the demonstrators high marks, praising their "courage" and "aspirations" and calling upon Iran to "open up" its political system.
