At least three people were killed and another twelve injured late Friday in a five-alarm fire at a 36-story Honolulu apartment building. Two of the victims have been identified as a mother and her adult son, who got trapped on the 26th floor, where the fire broke out. The injured people, including one firefighter, were listed in serious condition early Saturday, though no further details were provided. Authorities have warned that the death toll may rise, as some residents of the Marco Polo apartments are still unaccounted for. It took at least 100 firefighters several hours to tackle the blaze, which spread because the high-rise was not equipped with sprinklers, Mayor Kirk Caldwell said. The cause of the blaze was not immediately known.
