Time magazine defended its cover featuring the image of a crying 2-year-old Honduran girl that went viral this week. While some assumed the child was separated from her mom at the border, the little girl was actually taken to a detention center with her mom, The Daily Beast reported. Time corrected its story—which originally stated that the girl was “carried away screaming by U.S. Border Patrol agents” after the photo was taken—to say the pair were “taken away together.” But the magazine still stood by its use of the image on the cover. “The June 12 photograph of the 2-year-old Honduran girl became the most visible symbol of the ongoing immigration debate in America for a reason: Under the policy enforced by the administration, prior to its reversal this week, those who crossed the border illegally were criminally prosecuted, which in turn resulted in the separation of children and parents. Our cover and our reporting capture the stakes of this moment,” the magazine said in a statement.
