The New York Times Magazine has chosen Hugo Lindgren, the former editorial director of New York Magazine and the executive editor at Bloomberg BusinessWeek, to be its next top editor. The choice comes as a surprise—Lindgren’s name appeared on few people’s lists of possible candidates, perhaps because he took the job at Bloomberg BusinessWeek just seven months ago. Many expected the Times Magazine to choose from within after its first choice for the job, New Yorker editor Daniel Zalewski, turned them down. But Lindgren has experience at the Times Magazine—he worked there under previous editor Adam Moss, whom he followed to New York.
