A toddler in California shot his mother after finding a loaded gun in the back of her car, according to a report from NBC4. “Preliminary information gathered at the scene revealed that the female’s three children were in the back seat of the vehicle when one of the children accessed an unsecured shotgun and shot her through the back of the seat,” said Juanita Navarro-Suarez, a deputy at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The unidentified woman was shot in the middle of her body by her young son, and is expected to survive the incident. Her children were taken into custody. NBC4 notes that this isn’t the first time a young child has accidentally shot their parent: According to a report from gun violence prevention group Everytown for Gun Safety, there have already been at least five other accidental shootings by children in 2019.
