NATO officials have reported that General Mohammad Daud Duad, the top police commander for northern Afghanistan, was one of seven people killed by a suicide bombing on Saturday. General Daud was former military commander of Afghanistan's Northern Alliance, a group of Taliban combatants. Daud is the most senior Afghani military commander to be killed so far in the Taliban's aggressive "spring offensive." His death is viewed as a big victory for the Islamic militant group and another sign that NATO's current counter-terrorist efforts are not successfully hampering Taliban suicide attacks.
