A top leader in the Haqqani militant network was killed on Thursday, a senior U.S. official confirmed, just weeks after the U.S. announced its mission to crack down on Haqqani insurgents shuttling between Afghanistan and Pakistan. Janbaz Zadran was killed in Pakistan in the Haqqani stronghold of Miran Shah, an area that has been hit by U.S. drones in the past. The official said Zadran’s death was a major blow to the Haqqani network, which is considered the biggest terror threat in Afghanistan and has also worked with al Qaeda and the Taliban.
