A topless protester attempted to swipe a statue of baby Jesus from the nativity scene in St. Peter’s Square in Vatican City on Thursday. Inna Shevchenko, who heads up the feminist activist group Femen, was topless with the words “God Is Woman” emblazoned on her chest when she tried to steal the figurine. A Vatican guard immediately apprehended Shevchenko, covering her with his cape and taking the statue before escorting her to a local police station. The demonstration occurred hours after Pope Francis gave his Christmas address from St. Peter’s Basilica, but thousands of people were still in the square. Femen has previously staged topless protests at the Vatican, including an incident last month over the pope’s visit to the European Parliament.
