A toxic algae bloom 1.5 times the size of Rhode Island is headed toward Florida’s Gulf Coast. The algae bloom emits odorless chemicals that can damage human health and could be lethal to marine creatures. Already, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has received thousands of reports of dead marine life. Toxic algae was expected to hit Lake Erie’s shore late last month, and a few weeks later, Toledo’s water supply was deemed unsafe due to the presence of the toxic algae.
