21-year-old transgender women Deshawnda Sanchez was killed early Wednesday morning as she ran from a gunman, making her the third transgender women of color killed in the Los Angeles area in the past six months. Police have classified Sanchez’s murder as a robbery and homicide but are also considering the possibility that her murder was a hate crime. Sanchez called 911 around 4 a.m. to report that she was being robbed, then apparently ran to a home on a cul-de-sac to find safety. The resident inside the home heard knocking and a gunshot. “We found no pocketbook or purse, so we know that she was robbed,” Los Angeles police Det. Christopher Barling said.
