The Coen brothers’ period Western, True Grit, buoyed by critical accolades, has shown tremendous stamina at the box office, surpassing the Ben Stiller-Robert De Niro comedy Little Fockers to become the No. 1 movie in America this weekend. The film earned an estimated $15 million in ticket sales, edging out Fockers, which came in second with $13.8 million, down nearly 50 percent from the weekend prior. True Grit has become Joel and Ethan Coen’s first film to gross over $100 million at the domestic box office. Two critically maligned films entered the race this past weekend, but failed to leave a dent—the Nicolas Cage medieval fantasy epic Season of the Witch brought in $10.7 million and Gwyneth Paltrow’s Country Strong, which expanded to wide release, earned $7.3 million.
