President Trump reportedly once told a group of Republican congressmen that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is “as mean as a snake,” according to an excerpt from Trump’s former Special Assistant Cliff Sims published Monday in Politico Magazine. The comment was reportedly made in February 2017, when Trump met with Republican lawmakers in the Roosevelt Room for a strategy meeting. When McConnell (R-KT) told Trump that Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) wouldn’t sign on to their plan to overhaul Obamacare and that Republicans would try to oust him from office, Trump was at first surprised. “Do we have to go after him like that?” the president reportedly asked. “Absolutely, Mr. President,” McConnell allegedly replied. “We’re going to crush him like a grape.” After a few tense moments of silence, Trump reportedly responded: “This guy’s mean as a snake!” which caused the entire room to start laughing. “I like it, though, Mitch,” he allegedly added. “If that’s what you think we need to do.”
