President Donald Trump on Tuesday night congratulated Democrat Doug Jones on his stunning win in Alabama’s Senate election. Despite having backed Republican Roy Moore in the race, Trump appeared to admit defeat and commended Jones for his “hard fought victory” in an unusually restrained tweet. “The write-in votes played a very big factor, but a win is a win,” Trump said. “The people of Alabama are great, and the Republicans will have another shot at this seat in a very short period of time. It never ends!” Trump had thrown his support behind Moore despite several sexual-misconduct allegations against the former judge.
