President Donald Trump granted a posthumous pardon to the first black heavyweight boxing champion, Jack Johnson, Thursday, according to the Associated Press. “It's my honor to do it. It's about time,” Trump said, alongside boxer Lennox Lewis and actor Sylvester Stallone. The pardon comes more than a century after Johnson’s racially-charged conviction in 1913 for violating the Mann Act—which barred transporting women across state lines for “immoral” purposes. Johnson was traveling with his white girlfriend, Belle Schreiber, who was a prostitute. Trump said that Stallone brought Johnson’s story to his attention in a phone call. The pardon was something Trump wanted to do “to correct a wrong in our history.” “He represented something that was both very beautiful and very terrible at the same time,” the president said. Johnson died in 1946.
