President Trump is reportedly refusing to compromise in his trade negotiations with Canada. The deal will be “totally on our terms,” he said in off-the-record remarks to Bloomberg reporters obtained by the Toronto Star. “Off the record, Canada’s working their ass off. And every time we have a problem with a point, I just put up a picture of a Chevrolet Impala,” a source quoted Trump as saying to the Star. The Impala is manufactured in Ontario. Trump reportedly said that he wanted the remarks to be off-the-record because “it’s going to be so insulting they’re not going to be able to make a deal.” Bloomberg honored Trump’s request to keep the remarks off the record, according to the Star. In a tweet Friday, he railed against Bloomberg for “blatantly violated” the “powerful understanding” of his off the record comments. “Oh well, just more dishonest reporting. I am used to it. At least Canada knows where I stand!” he wrote. Trump announced earlier this week that he is “terminating” the North American Free Trade Agreement, and replacing it with a new deal with Mexico. He was optimistic Wednesday that Canada would join the new agreement. “I think Canada very much wants to make the deal,” the president said.
