President Trump took to Twitter on Saturday to offer what many see as a belated response to last year’s deadly Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville. Calling for unity ahead of the one-year anniversary of the violence, Trump lamented the “senseless death and division” that resulted from the riots. “I condemn all types of racism and acts of violence,” he wrote. In the immediate aftermath of the violence, in which one woman was killed and dozens of others injured, Trump refused to directly condemn the white nationalists who had organized the rally. Instead, he denounced the violence “on many sides” and suggested there were “very fine people” among the white nationalists attending the rally.
