President Trump has sent an initial request of $7.9 billion to Congress to fund recovery efforts in flood-stricken Texas. The request, which will allocate $7.4 billion for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, is just the first installment, with the money to go towards housing assistance, clean-up efforts and home repairs financed by FEMA. About 436,000 residents have already registered for FEMA aid in the wake of Tropical Storm Harvey, the White House said. The White House has also asked for an additional $6.7 billion to replenish FEMA funds as part of a stopgap spending measure that Congress must pass by the end of September.
