President Trump slammed his acting Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney for proposing a shutdown compromise during a bipartisan meeting with congressional leaders on Jan. 4, according to a Sunday report from Axios. After Trump spent the meeting reiterating his demand for $5.7 billion in border wall funding, one source told Axios, Mulvaney jumped in to suggest “that if Dems weren't OK with $5.7 [billion] and the president wasn't OK with $1.3 [the Democratic offer] ... he was trying to say we should find a middle ground.” Trump reportedly did not take well to this statement, and told Mulvaney that “You just fucked it all up, Mick,” according to the report. Another White House official downplayed the incident, telling Axios, “This is an exaggerated account of the exchange that doesn't reflect the good relationship Mulvaney has built over the last two years with the president.” The source also claimed that “the president and Mulvaney joked about it afterwards.”
