A Tunisian court has sentenced a British DJ to a year behind bars for playing a remix featuring the Muslim call to prayer at a nightclub last weekend. The DJ, who goes by Dax J, had already fled the country by the time the sentence was handed down Thursday. He was found guilty of public indecency and offending public morality. The nightclub, which was shut down in the wake of the scandal, had charges against it dropped, though prosecutors have appealed the court’s decision. Local authorities reacted with outrage after video of the concert, part of the Orbit Festival in the town of Nabeul, was released online. “We will not allow attacks against religious feelings and the sacred,” Mnaouar Ouertani, the governor of Nabeul, said after the incident. The organizers of the Orbit Festival apologized on behalf of Dax J, saying he “did not realize it might offend an audience from a Muslim country like ours.” Dax J himself also offered a public apology, saying, “It was never my intention to upset or cause offense to anybody.”
