Tens of thousands turned out in Tunis and other cities to mourn the passing of Tunisian opposition leader Chokri Belaïd Friday. Just one day later, 6,000 supporters of the ruling party took to the streets of Tunis to hold a counterprotest in support of their leader, Rachid Ghannouchi, who was the target of opposition anger at the funeral demonstrations. Belaïd's death on Wednesday, at the hands of an unidentified gunman, was Tunisia's first political assassination in decades.
