Turkey formally issued an arrest warrant on Thursday for U.S.-based cleric Fethullah Gülen, whom the Turkish government believes was the mastermind of last month’s failed coup attempt. Gülen, who lives on a compound in Pennsylvania, has denied the allegations and insists his message is peaceful. Turkey has not yet formally asked the U.S. to extradite Gülen, but Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on to U.S. to do so just days after the failed coup attempt, calling Gülen a “terrorist.” More than 200 people were killed during the uprising, and thousands have been jailed and purged from the military.
